On Thursday, February 23, 2017, the White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer warned states that have legalized recreational marijuana that the Trump administration views recreational marijuana use as a violation of federal law and implied that there will be greater federal enforcement in those states that have legalized recreational cannabis use. Spicer further went on to say, that while federal law prohibits raids of medical marijuana operations, “that’s very different than the recreational use, which is something the Department of Justice, […], will be further looking into.” http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-trump-marijuana-20170223-story.html

Thankfully, Spicer’s view is meeting some opposition from Congress. Representative Don Young from Alaska believes that the federal government should stay out of this topic completely and said that he will butt heads with the US Attorney General if he has to. –Los Angeles Times

California’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra also issued a statement on Thursday and assured California residents that if there is action from the federal government regarding California’s legalization of recreational marijuana, he will respond in a way to protect the interests of California. –Los Angeles Times
